In industrial facilities, the Cause & Effect Matrix describes which event triggers which safety action. It is an essential tool for ESD, BMS, and natural gas protection systems.
What is a Cause
A Cause is an event or condition, such as high gas pressure, leak detection, loss of combustion air, emergency stop, or loss of power supply.
What is an Effect
An Effect is the action that must follow, such as valve closure, burner shutdown, alarm activation, or starting ventilation.
Why it is useful
The matrix allows technicians, automation specialists, and engineers to clearly know which reaction is expected for every fault.
Logic verification
During commissioning and periodic tests, each cause can be simulated to confirm that the correct effect is executed.
Changes and modifications
If PLC logic, equipment, or process changes, the matrix must be updated. Otherwise, the documentation no longer represents the actual installation.
Importance for diagnosis
In a trip event, the Cause & Effect helps to distinguish the root cause from the subsequent system actions.
