Even the correct solenoid valve can encounter problems if installed incorrectly. Flow direction, installation position, piping cleanliness, and mechanical stresses directly affect its operation and sealing.
Flow direction is mandatory
There is usually an arrow on the valve body indicating the permitted flow direction. The internal construction, the pressures on the shutter, and the sealing method are designed for this direction. If installed backwards, it may not function correctly or fail to ensure the intended safety.
Coil position and orientation
The manufacturer specifies the permitted installation positions. In many models, the coil must not face downwards because the mechanism and the accumulation of contaminants may be affected. Do not apply a general rule without checking the specific datasheet.
Why a filter is needed before the valve
Particles from the piping can settle on the seat and prevent complete closure. A suitable filter before the valves significantly reduces the risk of mechanical jamming and internal leakage.
Piping cleaning before installation
During the construction or modification of a network, filings, rust, sealing materials, or other foreign bodies may remain. The piping must be prepared according to the established procedure before the valve is connected.
Mechanical stresses on the body
The solenoid valve must not be used as an "alignment point" for misaligned piping. Poor alignment or excessive tightening can stress the body, affect connections, and create sealing problems.
Access for maintenance
The installation position must allow for inspection of the nameplate, electrical connections, pressure, and, where provided, access for maintenance or coil replacement. Practical accessibility reduces errors during diagnosis.
Electrical wiring
The cables must have the appropriate cross-section and protection, the cable glands must be properly installed, and grounding must follow the manufacturer's requirements. Loose terminals can cause voltage drops, heating, and intermittent operation.
Post-installation checks
After any intervention, the required tightness and functional checks are necessary. It is also confirmed that the valve opens and closes at the correct phase of the sequence and that there are no abnormal pressure drops.
Proper installation is just as important as the correct selection of the component. Many "valve failures" are actually caused by the installation, the piping, or the electrical connection.
