Natural gas consumption measurement is not just for billing. In an industrial setting, it can be used for energy monitoring, production line comparison, performance checks, and early detection of unusual consumption.
Flow rate and total consumption
The flow rate expresses how much gas passes through in a given time, while the total reading shows the volume consumed over a period. For burner operation, the instantaneous flow rate is of particular interest.
What does Nm³ mean?
The volume of a gas changes with pressure and temperature. To allow for comparison of quantities, a corrected reference volume is used, usually expressed in normal cubic meters. The exact reference conditions and the method of correction are determined by the measurement system and the applied specifications.
From volume to energy
Energy content depends on the calorific value of the gas. Therefore, the same volumetric consumption should not be converted into energy using an arbitrary fixed factor without knowing the supplier's conditions and data.
Why sub-metering is useful
With individual meters, it is possible to see how much each boiler or production line consumes. This allows for the comparison of consumption per ton of product, per hour of operation, or per unit of heat produced.
Unusual consumption
An increase in consumption without a corresponding increase in production may indicate lower efficiency, poor combustion tuning, longer operating hours, or another operational issue. It is not a diagnosis in itself, but it is an important indicator.
Data logging
Trend analysis over time is often more useful than a single reading. Systematic recording of flow, pressure, and load can reveal problems that do not appear during a brief on-site inspection.
