Gas solenoid valves do not all have the same dynamic behavior. Some open very quickly, while others feature a controlled or slow-opening mechanism. This difference directly affects the quantity of gas reaching the burner in the first few seconds of ignition.
Why opening time matters
During ignition, an air-gas mixture must be created within specific limits. If the gas flow increases too abruptly, harsh ignition may occur. Conversely, if the flow is delayed too much, the flame may not stabilize within the allowed safety time.
Fast closing – a basic safety requirement
Regardless of the opening method, safety valves are usually designed to close quickly when the signal is lost or a safety feature is triggered. Quick closing limits the unwanted continuation of gas supply.
Adjustable slow opening
In some models, there is an initial opening or damping adjustment. This setting should not be changed arbitrarily. It is linked to combustion settings, ignition power, and the burner manufacturer's instructions.
Symptoms of incorrect behavior
Possible symptoms include loud noise during ignition, delayed ignition, repeated flame failure, flame that appears and disappears immediately, or a large pressure change at opening.
It is not always a valve problem
Similar symptoms can stem from gas pressure, pilot/ignition settings, the electrode, the ignition transformer, combustion air, or burner management system settings. Therefore, assessment must be based on the entire sequence.
What the technician observes
Useful information includes the time from the valve command to flame appearance, the pressure behavior before and after the valve, the ignition power, and whether the valve moves smoothly without delays or chattering.
Replacement with a "similar" valve
Replacing a valve with one of the same diameter and voltage but a different opening time can change the startup behavior. For this reason, the full part number and operating characteristics must be checked, not just the DN and the coil.
Opening dynamics are part of the overall combustion setup and must remain in accordance with the approved burner configuration.
