Natural gas meters and the components surrounding them include several connections, flanges, and points that must be checked periodically.

Inspection points

Inlet, outlet, flanges, impulse lines, pressure taps, and any bypass lines are checked.

Mechanical stress

Poor piping support can transfer loads to the meter body and cause loss of tightness.

After replacement

Every meter change must be followed by a leak test on all affected connections.

Small connections

Pressure taps and thin instrument lines are often overlooked, even though they can develop micro-leaks.

Recording

The inspection must be recorded along with any observations regarding corrosion, piping stress, or seal deterioration.
