Not all heat pumps use an electric compressor. There are systems powered by a gas engine or thermal energy.

The compressor is driven by an internal combustion engine that uses gas.
Thermally driven
Absorption or adsorption systems use heat as the primary energy input.
Where they make sense
In special installations where gas or waste heat is available and electrical power is limited.
