The natural gas meter records the volume of gas flowing to an installation. It is the primary instrument upon which consumption recording is based, but its reading should not be confused with the actual energy content of the gas.

What the meter measures

In most installations, the meter records the gas volume. The reading increases as long as there is flow to the appliances or burners.

Volume and energy are not the same

The energy provided by natural gas also depends on its calorific value. Therefore, consumption in cubic meters and consumption in kWh are not the same value.

What affects the reading

Pressure, temperature, and reference conditions affect the actual volume of the gas. In larger installations, volume correctors are used.

Practical check

If the reading changes while all consumption points are closed, an inspection of the installation and the metering system itself by a qualified technician is required.
