When primary and secondary flow rates are not equal, mixing occurs within the hydraulic separator.
Primary greater
Part of the hot supply returns to the heat pump.
Secondary greater
Part of the return mixes with the supply to the terminals.
Why it matters
Mixing can alter the ΔT and affect both efficiency and load coverage capacity.
