Natural gas regulators are divided into two main categories based on their control method: direct acting and pilot-operated.

Direct acting

The diaphragm and spring act directly on the main regulation element. The design is simpler and is used in many small and medium-sized applications.

Pilot-operated

A smaller pilot regulator controls the pressure that actuates the main regulator. This results in greater accuracy and flow capacity.

Advantages of a pilot system

Better stability under large load changes and the ability to handle higher flow rates.

More control points

Pilot systems have more small passages and lines that must remain clean and leak-free.
